How to explore Hamburg with almost no money
– Moin from Hamburg –

Hamburg – “my pearl”. Since I am a student and sometimes have limited possibilities to explore things, I´ll show you ideas to get to know parts of Hamburg with almost no money. As I mentioned in my Rhodes post sometimes the inexpensive things are worth to see and create a sense of freedom and humanity. This post is aimed especially at people who do not come from Hamburg, but of course someone from Hamburg can be inspired too:

#1 Planten un Blomen

In the spring or summer time Planten un Blomen is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the nature. This city park/botanic garden is beautiful and has large lawns where a picnic is just the right thing. In the evening (May to August 10 pm) the romantic water light show highlighted with music is a place to be. The atmosphere – especially when you´re surounded with someone you love – is simply incredible.

#2 Schanzen Flea Market and  #3 Schanzen Street Festival:

Who visit Hamburg the first time, has to see the Sternschanze. This place has an unique and intellectual flair to it. Especially when the flea market or the street festival takes place you should take a look.  Everyone has to discover this district of Hamburg on itself because someone may like it and someone not. In addition it should be noticed that sometimes there are in the evening of the festival are some riots, so you have to be careful. But during the day there is peaceful atmosphere, everyone is dancing, laughing and just enjoying life!

#4 Hamburg Goose Fair:

The Hamburger Dom offers colourful booths, nostalgic carousels and high-tech rides. Both Hamburg’s citizens and its visitors can have a wonderful time walking across the Heiligengeistfeld with its many exciting sights.

Sure you can spend a lot of money here but you can also just walking around and capturing all impressions. And of course you can enjoy a wonderful view from the big wheel which I show you here:

#5 Long Night of Museums

The Long Night of Museums is not for free but very inexpensive (15 €, reduced 10 €).

Hamburg will be cooperating to remain open from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. to provide you with an extraordinary experience. Join fellow art lovers and discover old as well as new museums and enjoy a special program which ranges from guided tours to music and dance performances. You will also find special events for children and offers in various languages to make this night a special one for everyone.

#6 Hamburg Port Anniversary:

Hamburg celebrates the world’s greatest port festival- depending on what time is it and in what spot of the port you are you can be attracted by loud music, dance, food and different views. I am personally love to be there where the `pure life` is 🙂 , where I am surrounded by a multi-cultural wave of people. This and the maritime feeling are amazing.

fireworks#7 Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival Hamburg and #8  Alster Festival:

The Alster Lake in the heart of the city is one of the main attractions in Hamburg. But especially beautiful and worth to see the Alster is when the Japanese Blossom Festival or the Alster Festival take place (for more information click the link above). The highlight of both evens is a huge beautiful fireworks.

#8 Street Art Festival Ottensen (STAMP Festival) – did not find the English link:

Feuerathlete

I love arts, so I´m in love with this wonderful street art festival which takes place every year in summer time. There are many international artists to see: Fire athletes, singers, comedy performers, acrobats and so on – all for free.

#9 White Dinner – did not find the English link:

In my opinion the White Dinner is a brilliant event – many people meet each other on an arranged place like (streets, parks lawns) – and organize a white dinner together, which means that the decoration is white but also the dresses are all white. For me this is a symbol of peace, harmony, equality, humanity. The event takes place every year about September.

#10 Ferry:

To use the ferry you need a simple bus ticket only. So you can discover Hamburg on ship /boat with almost no money. The fresh air and the views underline the maritime flair of Hamburg.

Fähre Hamburg

I hope you liked my suggestions! Of course there is so much more to discover in Hamburg. Depending on in which area you are, you have different atmosphere and an unique charm. Stay tuned when I´ll give suggestions about things to do with money.
